More 2013 App Forecasts

Here are a few points you may find of interested from Appcelerator's IDC 4th Quarter mobile Developer Report. (A survey taken from 2,837 Appcelerator mobile developers)

1. Be on the lookout for more apps in business, finance, education, medical, productivity, and mobile money fields. Appcelerator took data from surveys they have taken since 2010 and reported that for 2010 to 2012, interest in business apps have increased 20.3%, finance 8.2%,, education 8.1%, medical 8%, productivity 7.8%, mobile money 6.6%.

In contrast, interest in social networking apps have decreased 9.7% during that time and entertainment 7.4%.

I guess with Facebook and Google+ everyone has given up?

2. 92.9% of devs predict that it is "likely to very likely" that in 2013, mobile commerce will be a full throttle with retail companies pushing forth mobile shopping. And 86.4% predict that it is "likely to very likely" that shoppers will look up items on a retailer's site via their mobile device, WHILE shopping in the store.

Do you think so? That means a total change of in-store shopper behavior within the next year...

3. The survey also reveals names of vulnerable companies suceptible to disruption by a mobile-first startup: linkedin, Amazon, Blackberry, Apple, Facebook, Google, Pinterest, Rim, Micrisoft, Nokia, Ebay, Samsun, Windows, Twitter, Yahoo, Zynga

With that said, 62.4% said that it is "likely to very likely" that a mobile-first social startup could disrupt the market share from Facebook.

This is somewhat contradicting to the data in #1, where less devs are supposedly interested in developing social networking apps... but I guess that just means they figure "someone else" will develop the app most likely to disrupt Facebook?

Although there is a possibility, I don't know if it is "very likely." Facebook has knocked off popular social networking sites from around the world. Myspace went under renewal but is still dead, Mixi (once number 1 in Japan) and Cyworld in Korea are only a few victims to name when considering the international scene.

Kakao Talk (an messaging app in Korea that every smartphone user installs) tried to start up a mobile-first networking platform and although it gained many users due to pushing their solid Kakao Talk user base to set an account up, it has yet to shadow a threat to Facebook.

In any case, it's exciting to see what 2013 brings to the mobile world!
Have a happy new year!!

Mobile HTML5 Apps for Business

Facebook has abandoned HTML5 (for now), but more and more reports show that we can't deny that HTML5 will play a huge role in mobile app development for the next few years.

According to Tab Times, "HTML5 mobile apps will improve in 2013, and that can only be a good thing for developers and businesses."

Yes, that means cutting development costs, offering cross-platform support, and addressing fragmentation (although fragmentation issues are still in the works at this point).

It goes on to say that "a study from cross-platform developer Kony earlier this year suggested 80% of all mobile apps will be wholly or in-part based on the technology by 2015."

The number of so called native apps (iOS and Android) that are built on the HTML5 framework are increasing -- they simply have a native wrapper to get into app stores.

Gartner also points out that "Through 2014, JavaScript performance will push HTML5 and the browser as a mainstream application developer environment. There will be long shift to HTML5 from native apps as HTML5 becomes more capable."

So HTML5 gets bashed in 2012...but this is definitely not the end.

In 2013, the technology will improve, more apps will gain visibility, and in 2014, the Worldwide Web Consrtium plans to bring about HTML5 app definitions and move toward standardizing.

This is an exciting time for the mobile world. If you know what's coming up, don't wait around and be left behind.

Holiday Festivities

DaVinci Team attended the company "Year-End Party" last night...

Not a Christmas party...but the department heads were crowned with santa hats for the night!

Nice, modern interior and tasty food, all complete with a talent show...

Nothing beats watching grown-ups mimicking pop stars and dancing on stage in front of 500+ people!

The grand prize was $1000... 2nd and 3rd runner-ups also received cash prizes of over $300.

And there was so much food that no one in our team could eat breakfast this morning...

some actually skipped lunch, too.

Festivities ended at around 10pm... so we could all scramble on the crowded subway to get back home...

Hope you are all having a great holiday season!

Best wishes from DaVinci Team.

Agenda for jQuery Conference Asia 2012

The speakers and agenda for the conference is as follows:

Speaker Agenda
Richard D. Worth
(jQuery Executive Director)
The State of jQuery
jQuery has grown over nearly 7 years to become the most widely used JavaScript library ever. What is planned for jQuery 2.0, and related projects jQuery UI, jQuery Mobile, QUnit, and TestSwarm. We will also discuss the jQuery Foundation, which supports the development of these and the community around them.
Ralph Whitbeck
(jQuery Board Member)
In-depth look at the mechanics of mobile app framework
According to the jQuery Mobile team, South Korea is the most popular country for jQuery Mobile development in the world. This session will take an in-depth look at the mechanics of this excellent mobile app framework as well as cover widget creation, plugin integration, and custom theming. And that's not all.
Kris Borchers
(Red Hat Senior Software Engineer)
The New Hotness in jQuery UI
The jQuery UI team has been working really hard lately to not only update the website, add an API site, and fix bugs and further stabilize the library, but to also add a number of new, and highly requested widgets. In this talk, we will take a brief look at the status of the jQuery UI project and its planned roadmap going forward. From there, we'll dive a little deeper into the new widgets that were introduced in 1.9, then we'll take a quick look at what's coming in 1.10, 1.11 and 2.0 and hopefully give you a clear picture of where the project is headed and how you could possibly jump in and help us out.
Corey Frang
(Active jQuery contributor)
jQuery Animation
Animation is not a simple thing. We will learn to avoid some common problems people face when trying to animate, learn how to best use and extend jQuery's animation capabilities, and explore the new animation options in jQuery 1.8 and UI 1.9.
Julian Aubourg
(jQuery Core Team Member)
Ask Julian About XHRAbstract: Think
Think you know everything about $.ajax()? Think again! Prefilters, transports, converters: there are so many ways you can hook into jQuery's network architecture and make your life that much easier. Illformed JSON you have no way to fix on the backend? Solved! Need to load a stylesheet and wait for it to be loaded? Solved! Need to parse error messages automagically? Solved! If you're using $.ajax() on a daily basis, then that's a session you don't wanna miss.
Dan Heberden
(jQuery Foundation Director of Technology)
Getting In Sync With Async
Asynchronous code is hard. Especially when it needs to happen synchronously. We'll cover a great solution to this problem using jQuery's Deferreds and Callbacks API. We'll also take a look at how flow control and asynchronous operations can be easily managed and utilized to their fullest potential.
Chang Wook Do
(DaVinci Development Team)
Data Binding with DaVinci Studio
(Case Study : Data-driven model and Knockout.JS)
Data Binding is technology and a concept that closely connects data and UI. We'll take a look at a case study using Knockout.JS to develop a data-driven model web client. We will go over the value of data-driven mode within web apps in the hopes to deepen understanding for integrating various open sources.
Yun Ho Choi
(DaVinci Development Team)
How to Use a HTML5 Dev Tool (DaVinci Studio)
The main goal for HTML5 tools is to develop optimized web app UX. This lecture covers what devs are looking for in tools and will also cover the webkit browser that works as the editing engine. We'll go over problems that may occur during development and how to solve them.
Won Seok Lee
(DaVinci Development Team)
HTML5 and a New Era
We have entered a "mobile era" in which standard technologies have opened doors to an open web platform -- a new generation platform that provides freedom with app compatibility. In this session, we will look at HTML5 industry trends, W3C standardization (including Web OS and app stores), and what this new era has to bring.

The Power of YouTube

I'm sure you all have heard of Psy and "Gangnam Style" by now... here he is on the Today Show in New York. The crowd is complete crazy over him.

The song is number 1 on the i-tunes charts...and it is frequently posted all over Facebook and Twitter. Now beyond the Korean community and completely mainstream.

This entertainer is making a huge name for himself all over the world. Even if his fans don't know what he's singing about or even where Gangnam is. Wait, you did know that "Gangnam" is a name of a place, right?

What is exactly causing this world-wide mania? The song? The funny dance? The video? Or Psy's funny character?

I guess it could be everything put together... He already enjoys a renown career as an enterainer in Korea and participates as a judge on "Super Star K 4" (it's like a Korean version of American Idol).

Plus a little luck.

10 years ago, this mania would've never happened. It just wasn't possible. Sure, YouTube existed, but people were no where near as dependent on it or frequently watched it as they do today. I supposed it is inter-dependent with Facebook and Twitter, which all drive the sharing power of internet media.

10 years ago, I had a difficult time keeping up with popular music overseas. There just weren't enough resources. Information wouldn't get to me realtime as it does now. However, with the help of YouTube and internet radio, I can listen to what's hot right now from anywhere in the world.

I can keep up with today's music and the whole world is now influenced by a wider range of media.

Kind of awesome, but kind of scary at the same time! Now crazy fads can take over the world.

What do you think of Psy? One hit wonder? Or world-wide star?

HTML5 Biz App Development
Use the DaVinci Studio to easily develop HTML5 apps for business. Enjoy a seamless environment for development to servicing.

Create Rich Media Contents
The DaVinci Animator allows you to effectively create rich HTML5, CSS3, and Java script media content.

Work Flow Tools
DaVinci provides for a customized environment for various industries such as magazines, e-Learning, e-Books, games, web ads, etc.

 Web Application Framework
DaVinci offers an optimized JavaScript Framework for developing HTML5-based web apps. On one hand, it uses a general HTML document format, but it also offers the key functions needed to develop a great web app UX as well as biz logic, thus providing for an easy-to-use tool for developers

Work Flow Management
During web app development, all kinds of dev tools are needed for different aspects, such as UX design, Javascript programming, server API integration, etc. Today, most developers use a number of tools according to the stage of the project. However, DaVinci Studio offers a complete “Tool-Chain” centered around a WYSIWYG authoring tool, while supporting standard web development work flows.

Open Architecture
DaVinci Studio does not follow a custom format at the authoring stage, but rather a HTML5 standard format, which guarantees perfect integration and compatibility with other 3rd party solutions. Open source libraries, such as KnockOut, jsView/jsRender, Impress.js, turn.js, etc., are already integrated so users only need to select and apply. Not only that, but other open source frameworks can also be used freely as a substitute.

Compact & Optimized Widget System
DaVinci provides widget architecture in classes based on jQuery. Web app development is a piece of cake for jQuery users as they have access to components that use DOM and JavaScript and may also enjoy a completely open environment. DaVinci has a compact and optimized JavaScript framework library and offers stable, quick partial scrolling.

Plug-In Widget Architecture
DaVinci’s framework offers a plug-in architecture in which 3rd parties can easily create and use custom widgets. Users can add to basic widgets to create new, improved content or utilize their resources (HTML/CSS/JavaScript) to make brand new, original widgets as they see fit.

Tool-Chain
DaVinci includes the DaVinci Studio and the DaVinci Animator, both top-notch HTML5 authoring tools in the market today. The DaVinci Studio offers an optimized “Tool-Chain” for web app development work flows (DaVinci Studio, CSS Level2/3 Editor, CSS Level3 Animation Editor, N-Screen Editor, Data-Set Editor, Widget Maker, etc.). DaVinci caters to developer and designer collaborations, thus maximizing productivity and maintenance efficiency.

Visual Data Binding
DaVinci provides a MVC dev model that is visually produced/managed by the Data-Set Editor. Developers can visually confirm and process server response messages based on server connection data. DaVinci also supports visual binding between model data and view components. When Visual Data Binding is used, various server integration UI aspects such as List Style, Detail View Style, etc. can be easily modified without coding even one line.

Responsive Web Design
The CSS3 Media Query-Based N-Screen Editor is provided especially for responsive web design. Users can easily and quickly develop/manage optimized content for N-Screen in a WYSIWYG environment.

Testing
Qunit is a powerful, easy to use JavaScript unit test suite utilized by jQuery solutions. DaVinci also uses Qunit as a unit test solution. Users may easily apply Qunit and DaVinci to their development projects.
